Avoid Storing Eggs in Fridge Doors
Many refrigerators are equipped with special plastic containers on the doors, shaped ideally to fit eggs. However, contrary to this design, it's not the best place to store eggs. The same applies to frozen eggs near the freezer door. Tomasz Jokiel, an expert from Ferm Drobiu Jokiel, provides us with an explanation:
Hence, temperature fluctuations pose a serious issue. Opening the fridge door exposes the product to warmth, and closing it leads to a swift cooling, impeding the longevity of the eggs. Other sensitive items like dairy products and meats should also avoid the fridge door.
Method of Proper Egg Storage
Eggs are best kept in the fridge at temperatures ranging between 34°F to 45°F in packaging that protects against possible damage and inhibits absorption of foul odors from other products. Also, remember to store the eggs with the narrow end downwards. There's a diminutive air chamber located at the sharp end of an egg, and maintaining them in this position enables the air to stay put, thus preserving egg freshness for a longer span, possibly up to five weeks.
When uncertain about eggs' freshness, a simple test can be conducted. Just drop an egg in water. If it sinks to the bottom and remains flat, it's fresh. A little floating implies the egg is older but still good to go. However, if the egg floats on the surface, it's no longer fresh and should be consumed as soon as possible.
