Expert tips on diet to slow aging: What really works
Can the right diet extend youthfulness? Numerous studies confirm it. Recently, German cardiologist and nutritionist Prof. Boris Bigalke contributed his findings. According to him, several products help slow down the aging process.
Why do we age? The human body rejuvenates by renewing millions of cells every day. However, as we age, this process becomes less efficient, leading to more damaged or dead cells in the body. These contribute to many diseases, deteriorating health, and the natural aging process.
Nutrition affects aging
There is still no medicine that prevents the aging of cells. However, scientists believe there is much we can do about it ourselves. Professor Boris Bigalke is one of them. According to him, physical activity, sleep phases, dietary supplements, and avoiding harmful factors are significant. However, he focuses most of his attention on nutrition.
How to maintain youthfulness
Prof. Bigalke believes that for a long life, the mTOR pathway, the primary center controlling cell growth, is of great importance. It also affects the creation of new proteins. When disrupted, many diseases can occur. A low-calorie diet, physical exercise, and certain plant ingredients are beneficial for it.
Professor's brief list
The first ingredient mentioned by the scientist is resveratrol. It is found in red grapes, red wine, dark chocolate, and peanuts. This antioxidant prevents cell damage, has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects, and protects the heart, blood vessels, and brain. However, a large portion of resveratrol is broken down in the intestines and does not enter the bloodstream. According to Prof. Bigalke, dietary supplements based on this substance may be helpful. He also mentions curcumin, found in turmeric and in small amounts in mustard. It reduces cell damage and has properties similar to resveratrol.
Chinese herb may extend life
The expert also regards a herb well-known in Chinese medicine as important. It's known as the herb of immortality, jiaogulan. It is important for mTOR because it contains a lot of ginsenosides. They help protect the brain against age-related changes and diseases, and improve cognition. Jiaogulan reduces inflammation, has anti-cancer effects, and strengthens the heart. However, this herb is still not approved as a food or dietary supplement in the EU.
A balanced diet is important
In his book, Prof. Bigalke mentions other functional nutritional components, such as vitamin C, taurine, and vanillin. However, he emphasizes that caution is always important, as both deficiency and excess are harmful to health. A balanced diet should provide the right amount of each vitamin.
