Exciting news for fans: "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" series drops Feb. 2, 2024
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith" is making a comeback in an entirely new incarnation. The roles were played by one of Hollywood's most sizzling couples, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt - now no longer together. The new version of the story promises to showcase other popular actors.
The upcoming project from Amazon Prime Video marks the third attempt to adapt the narrative of a marriage between two covert agents unaware of each other's real jobs onto the screen. In 1996-1997, a 13-episode series was created featuring Maria Bello and Scott Bakula. Yet, nothing has surpassed the success of Doug Liman's film featuring the famous Hollywood pair.
The 2005 title attracted attention due to a behind-the-scenes story that took on a life of its own. Jolie and Pitt first met on the set of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and swiftly embarked on a romance that blossomed into a longstanding relationship often seen as a model one. The attractive superstar divorced his then-wife, Jennifer Aniston, at the height of her "Friends"-fueled fame, for Jolie.
The narrative of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
Will the serial adaptation overshadow the globally beloved movie? The remake relates the story of two solitary strangers recruited by an enigmatic spy organization. Who could resist such an offer? Wealth, globetrotting, and a dreamy Manhattan townhouse - but what more could they desire?
However, there is a minor proviso they must accept: adopting a new surname and consenting to an arranged marriage. Presenting themselves as John and Jane, they conduct a perilous mission every week while confronting fresh trials in their relationship. Their life becomes even more intricate when they genuinely start developing feelings for each other.
The creators, cast, and premiere of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"
Maya Erskine (known for the series "PEN15", "Obi-Wan Kenobi") and Donald Glover (as a singer is known as Childish Gambino, famed for the series "Community" and his original "Atlanta") will step into the central characters' shoes. Joining them on screen are Michaela Coel (series "I May Destroy You", "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"), John Turturro (series "The Night Of", "The Batman"), Parker Posey (series "Lost in Space") and Wagner Moura (series "Narcos").
Donald Glover, assisted initially by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, oversees the production. Initially, the star and creator of the hit series "Fleabag" was set to play a leading role but withdrew due to creative differences. What a shame.
As reported by "TVLine", the eight-episode series "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" will be available on Amazon Prime Video from February 2, 2024.
