US Embassy in Iraq evacuated. Politicians had to leave in hurry
Washington has ordered the evacuation of embassy staff in Iraq's capital Baghdad and from the consulate in Irbil. Those working there who are not necessary on site are to be evacuated. This decision was made in the face of escalating tensions in the region.
The order, dated for Friday, was announced on Sunday in a press release. As indicated, it was issued "due to the increasing threat to the safety of personnel and interests of the United States". It pertains, among others, to "eligible family members (employees)" of the American diplomatic mission in Iraq.
The State Department also urges Americans, not to travel to Iraq "due to terrorism, kidnappings, armed conflicts, uprisings, and the mission's limited capabilities in Iraq in assisting American citizens".
In recent days, military bases in Iraq, where American troops are stationed, have been the target of several armed attacks by factions close to Iran.
