The European Commission has raised concerns about Elon Musk's involvement as the owner of platform X in the context of the German elections. In a conversation with "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung," Henna Virkkunen highlighted that the situation is being closely monitored. She stressed that further action will be taken if necessary.

Proceedings against platform X were initiated at the end of 2023 due to suspicions of violating the European Union's Digital Services Act. This act prohibits promoting disinformation and creating threats to elections. Due to their complexity, Virkkunen acknowledged that it might be challenging to conclude the proceedings before the election to the Bundestag.

Violations by X

The European Commission has launched proceedings against platform X to investigate potential violations of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Following Elon Musk's acquisition of the platform, concerns have emerged about insufficient transparency and a lack of action against disinformation. These issues include ineffective content moderation and inappropriate use of the platform's interface.

The DSA regulation, essential for the digital single market, seeks to ensure oversight over service providers and protect freedom of expression. It requires large platforms like X to minimize risks to users. If the allegations against Musk's platform are confirmed, it may face a fine of up to 6% of its global revenue.

The European Commission plans to work closely with online platforms to prevent the promotion of radical content. A meeting between EC representatives, key platforms, including X, and German authorities is scheduled for January 24th. The goal is to keep content promotion in check. In both cases, EU actions aim to protect consumers and ensure greater accountability from online platforms. The results of these investigations could significantly impact the future operations of major digital players in Europe, potentially encouraging competitiveness and innovation in this sector.

Musk as a threat

In an article published in "Die Welt," American historian Timothy Snyder warns about Elon Musk's impact on democracy. Snyder emphasizes that Musk, one of the wealthiest individuals globally, wields significant influence on international politics. According to Snyder, Musk and Putin are in frequent contact, which could negatively affect the free world.

Elon Musk is gaining disproportionate influence in American politics, sparking controversy. His support for Trump and involvement in government reforms highlight how wealth can shape policy, often bypassing democratic checks and balances. Supporters are concerned about deregulation that favors his interests.

Snyder points out that Musk supports extreme political movements like Brexit and the American "America First" movement, which aim to weaken democratic institutions. The historian argues that Musk's and Putin's actions seek to dismantle the international order based on state sovereignty and human rights. Snyder notes that the European Union, grounded in the rule of law, can counter the power of the international oligarchy.

Musk does not shy away from making provocative comments in international politics. His humorous yet controversial remarks about the Canadian prime minister, perceived as a provocation, demonstrate how his influence transcends borders, entering the international discourse on leadership and diplomacy.

According to Snyder, Germany is a pivotal country in Europe that could become the center of resistance against the influences of Musk and Putin. The historian warns that if Germany fails to recognize the threat's magnitude, other countries may struggle to defend themselves. Snyder emphasizes that Musk's goal is destroying states and human rights by promoting radical individualism. As an influential magnate, Musk represents a potential danger to sustainable political development.
