The EU responds to Trump’s announcements
The European Union is preparing to respond to potential tariffs that may be imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
"If the need arises to defend our economic interests, we will respond in a proportional manner," said EU Commissioner for the Economy Valdis Dombrovskis on CNBC.
During the World Economic Forum in Davos, Dombrovskis noted that the U.S.A. and Europe are strategic allies, and cooperation is crucial both geopolitically and economically. He indicated that European officials are in talks with their American counterparts to find a pragmatic solution regarding tariffs.
Even before his inauguration, Trump announced he would impose an additional 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada. On Monday, the new president of the U.S.A. confirmed that he is considering these tariffs, starting as early as February 1st. He also mentioned China and the European Union but provided no further details.
