EU stands firm against Trump's Greenland ambitions
The European Union will not accept attacks on its borders, stated Jean-Noel Barrot, the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, in response to Donald Trump's comments on Greenland.
The European Union will not accept attacks on its borders - declared Jean-Noel Barrot, the French foreign minister, in a conversation with France Inter radio. His statement was a reaction to the words of US President-elect Donald Trump concerning Greenland. Trump asserted that the United States needs this island for national security, questioning Denmark's rights to Greenland. The island has been part of the Kingdom of Denmark for 600 years and has enjoyed broad autonomy since 1979.
Barrot stated that the European Union would not permit any nation to violate its sovereign borders, emphasizing the continent's strength and resilience, according to the Polish Press Agency.
Donald Trump stirred controversy by wanting the US to purchase Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen firmly rejected this proposal, emphasizing that the island is not for sale.
Although the US's aspirations for Greenland might seem unrealistic, Trump has repeatedly pointed out the potential benefits of controlling this region. Due to its location and resources, Greenland is an important point in the map of strategic international interests.
Barrot commented on Elon Musk's actions
Minister Barrot also addressed the actions of Elon Musk, who meddled in EU politics. The head of the French Foreign Ministry emphasized that the European Commission should more rigorously enforce existing regulations.
Barrot emphasized that if the European Commission is unable to shield against such interferences or threats, it should seek assistance from the member states.
Through his social platform X, Elon Musk criticized European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and supported the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD). Barrot noted that such actions could lead to new political alliances, which is troubling. - When you participate in a government or aspire to be part of one, your opinions have rather particular value — underscored the minister.
