During his visit to Washington, Borrell met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Post-discussion, he emphasized the urgency of providing new support to Ukraine, underlining that the resolution of the conflict hinges on the actions taken in spring and summer.
"Whatever needs to be done to initiate new aid supplies for Ukraine, it must happen quickly," Borrell stressed, addressing American policymakers.
"The coming months are decisive"
Borrell argued that the West needs to "accelerate" its efforts. "We need to boost our support to achieve more, quicker. That's why we're enhancing our industrial defense capabilities, a move that involves the United States as well," he added.
Decisive months ahead
"The next few months are crucial. With many analysts anticipating a large Russian offensive this summer, Ukraine cannot afford to wait for the outcome of the next U.S. elections," Borrell pointed out.
"The Russian aggressor will not stop"
Previously, Borrell highlighted that Ukraine remains "the largest and most urgent concern" for Europe, as well as the collective security of the USA and the EU.
"And the Russian aggressor will not halt. It's up to us to stop it. Both sides are doing a lot, but together, I believe we can achieve even more in supporting the Ukrainians during these challenging times," he expressed.
In addition to support for Ukraine, the discussions between Borrell and Blinken covered the Middle East crisis, situations in the Western Balkans, and a united stance on China. They also talked about coordinating efforts to establish a maritime corridor for humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Borrell expressed gratitude towards Blinken for his endeavors to alleviate the suffering of Gaza's inhabitants.
