Epic Games faces $74 million refund for Fortnite mishaps
Epic Games is a video game developer. Their most well-known release is undoubtedly Fortnite, which quickly gained worldwide popularity. The studio has encountered issues related to unauthorized transactions involving children.
Fortnite—this game certainly needs no introduction. It features virtual reality concerts, unique skins, and celebrities involved in the promotion. Artists like Travis Scott, Metallica, and Ariana Grande highlight the company's ambitious budget. Moreover, Epic Games integrates pop culture elements by introducing characters like Indiana Jones, Anakin Skywalker, Spider-Man, and Alien into the game.
The game is free, contributing to its widespread popularity (unlike the song by Taylor Swift of the same title, which indirectly boosted its fame). However, players can make microtransactions using a virtual currency called V-bucks. These V-bucks allow users to purchase additional skins or battle packs to enhance the core gameplay.
Epic Games must return over $74 million
As previously mentioned, Fortnite relies on microtransactions. Players can purchase virtual currency by recharging an in-game account or linking a debit card to their device. Unfortunately, Epic Games exploited this loophole, allowing children to purchase without parental consent using their financial resources. The company must now refund the entire amount from these unauthorized transactions, totaling over $74 million.
