Enjoying herring's health benefits while minimizing risk

Herrings are nutrient-rich saltwater fish packed with vitamins B12, A, E, and D. These fish are also a source of selenium, iodine, zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, in particular, are considered one of the most important factors for cardiovascular health. Further, some studies suggest that these fish may contain anti-cancer properties.

Some participants consumed fries while others ate almonds. The results were compared after 30 days.

Additionally, these acids lower cholesterol levels in the blood, boost immunity, and positively affect our mood by increasing serotonin levels in the body. Omega-3 acids also improve concentration and memory. Herrings source a high-quality and easily digestible protein.

Potential Contamination with Toxins

Interestingly, when compared to other fish species like panga or tuna, herrings are only marginally contaminated with dioxins and heavy metals. Choosing herring is perceived as the "lesser evil," as there are essentially no completely toxin-free fish available in today's world.

However, even when purchasing herrings, it's important to consider their origin. Atlantic herrings are a better choice over those from the Baltic Sea. Wild herrings, caught in the Barents Sea or Norwegian Sea, will have the least toxic contaminants.

Despite this, they can still pose a risk to human health if consumed in excess. Therefore, caution is advised.

Fresh herring is the optimal choice. Steamed or baked herring maintains the valuable nutrients beneficial to health and is certainly healthier and less calorie-packed than deep-fried fish coated in breadcrumbs. Unfortunately, the herrings available on store shelves often contain high amounts of salt, sugar, preservatives, and chemical additives. Nevertheless, this is not the case for all herring products, hence the importance of carefully reading the labels.

It is advisable that people dealing with hypertension avoid consumption of herring with high salt content. Additionally, those with ailments like ulcers should not consume herrings with added vinegar.
