Elon Musk announces paid upgrade for Tesla Model Y range
We all knew it was bound to happen—Elon Musk aims to extend the driving range of the Tesla Model Y, specifically for the vehicles that have already been purchased and are on the road.
Elon Musk has revealed that the "standard" Tesla Model Y units, equipped with rear-wheel drive, can now achieve a longer distance on a single charge, albeit for a fee.
Depending on the battery configuration, Tesla Model Y owners could see an increase of 40 to 60 miles in their vehicle's range. The cost for this upgrade ranges from $1,500 to $2,000. Musk stated he is "working on compliance with regulations to make this possible," with a straightforward rationale: "We all have bills to pay," Musk quipped.
This opportunity arises as Tesla introduces a new version in the American market, boasting a range of just over 310 miles. Owners of the earlier models can enhance their vehicle's range for an additional fee.
It's noteworthy that in 2019, amidst the devastating wildfires in California, Tesla Model S owners were granted a free update to increase their vehicle's range, enabling them to reach safety. This gesture underscored Tesla's commitment to its community in times of crisis.
