Objects and substances going down the drain with the water can obstruct the smooth functioning of the sewage system. A blocked kitchen sink is a common issue. Often, home remedies work efficiently to reinstate the flow, and there's no need to resort to corrosive substances that could harm the pipes. So, what are the ways to unclog a sink?

How to Unclog a Kitchen Sink

Firstly, it's essential to understand that unclogging involves removing a blockage formed in the pipe. Most drains include a siphon, pipes leading to the riser, and sewer pipes that dispose of waste into the sewer system. A blockage formed within the route to the riser can typically be eliminated using home remedies or DIY methods. However, a blockage that occurs further along the piping may require a plumber’s visit.

DIY methods often involve using a wire, plunger, or a snake. Typically, the battle against a blocked sink begins with pouring homemade mixtures into the pipes. What are the most effective ones, and how should they be used correctly?

Unclogging a Sink at Home: Effective Methods

The most prevalent home remedy for unclogging a blocked sink is using vinegar. Heat the vinegar and pour it down the drain, then after about 30 minutes, rinse the pipes with hot water. If the blockage isn't significant, you may use hot water mixed with table salt instead of vinegar.

If the above methods aren't successful, you can also try using baking soda. To unclog a slightly more blocked drain, prepare a solution of baking soda and vinegar in a 3:1 ratio and pour it down the drain. After waiting for 30 minutes, flush the pipes with a few gallons of boiling water. Owners of home wastewater treatment facilities can first pour soda into the drain and then douse it with boiling vinegar. After approximately 30 minutes, rinse the drain with water.
