When it comes to simple, tasty cookies, shortbread instantly comes to mind. These buttery round delights are a must-have during the holidays - all guests will relish a homemade cookie. If properly stored, they retain their crispness for a long period.

Storing shortbread cookies properly

Shortbread cookies can maintain their taste and texture for an extended period, meaning they rarely go to waste. However, they're delicate and tend to absorb moisture easily. To retain their crunchiness, they should be stored in airtight containers, preferably metal cans. This prevents moisture ingress, which could otherwise soften the cookies. This way, they can maintain their delicious taste for longer.

Making holiday shortbread cookies

The secret to amazing shortbread cookies lies in the right preparation of the dough. For the right texture, combine the ingredients as briefly as possible. It's best to chop them with a knife until you achieve a crumbly consistency. Finally, knead the dough by hand just enough to merge the ingredients.

Alternatively, you can grate cold butter using a large-hole grater. The ingredients should be merged quickly and energetically to minimize contact with warm hands. Once kneaded, allow the dough to cool.

Ingredients:

  • 2.5 cups of flour,
  • 8.8 oz of butter,
  • 3/4 cup of powdered sugar,
  • 3–4 egg yolks.

  1. Sift the flour into a bowl. Add cubed butter and, using a knife, chop the ingredients until a crumbly mix is obtained.
  2. Add powdered sugar and mix well.
  3. Add egg yolks and knead the dough to blend the ingredients.
  4. Wrap the dough in cling film and refrigerate for at least half an hour.
  5. Remove the dough from the fridge and roll it out to a thickness of 1/8-1/6 inch.
  6. Use a cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on a baking sheet lined with baking paper.
  7. Before baking, you may brush the cookies with egg white and roll them in sugar or sprinkle them with colorful toppings.
  8. Bake at a preheated oven at 356 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes, until golden brown.
