Dwayne Johnson under fire. "He's shameless. Asking ordinary people for help"
In early September, Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey appealed on social media for donations to help the fire-ravaged island of Maui in Hawaii. They did not expect that they would be severely criticized for it. "Shame. They're asking ordinary people for help instead of contributing more themselves" - one could read on the internet.
On August 31st, Dwayne Johnson and Oprah Winfrey posted a video on Instagram about the "People's Fund of Maui" project. The goal was to raise money for residents affected by a tragedy. As a result of catastrophic fires that struck the island, 115 people died, dozens are considered missing, thousands of buildings were destroyed.
"We have the honor of starting this campaign with $10 million and we ask for your help in passing on donations to those who have lost their homes. Thank you in advance for your contribution" — reads the description of the film.
The idea seemed noble, but it was not warmly received. Most of the comments under the celebrities' plea were critical and expressed surprise at the idea of wealthy celebrities appealing to ordinary people to donate additional funds. "You have so much money! You can donate it and get it back within a year" - this was what most of the posts said.
The criticism grew so strong that Dwayne Johnson decided to respond to it in a video posted on his Instagram account. In it, the actor thanked the people who supported the fund, but also regretfully admitted his mistake.
- When we opened our fund, we caused some opposition in the network. I understand that. I know I could have behaved better and next time I will. You always tell me the truth - good and bad. […] I give you my word that I always listen, learn, develop to act better in the future. I've never set up a fund before. I understand you, I appreciate it. I will draw conclusions" - the Hollywood star promises.
