According to RTL Nieuws, two young men from Nieuwleusen embarked on a journey to Germany to acquire fireworks for the New Year's celebration. The trunk of the Volvo V70, driven by one of them, hosted a significant 165 pounds of pyrotechnic materials. These were intended to guarantee a grand celebration on New Year's Eve, however the actual events drastically digressed from their plan.

During the return trip, one of the men decided to enjoy a smoke — a tobacco product, he assured. Having partially finished but not fully extinguished his cigarette, he carelessly threw it out of the partially opened window. Regrettably, the airflow redirected the lit cigarette back into the vehicle, where it found its way into the trunk — home to the considerable stash of fireworks.

The resulting chain of events unfolded predictably. The fireworks — primed, ready, and now inadvertently lit — unsurprisingly detonated within the vehicle. The quick-thinking men immediately abandoned their car, their escape juxtaposed with a fiery spectacle of bursting fireworks and the illumination of colorful flares. The action was immortalized in a video published by RTL Nieuws.

Efforts to salvage the situation were in vain despite the intervention of the relevant authorities. The car eventually burned to a crisp but remarkably, the experience hasn't dampened the men's spirits or their enthusiasm for fireworks. They confidently expressed their intent to continue with their New Year's fireworks show, courtesy of the surplus pyrotechnics brought back from Germany by a friend.
