The drone warfare escalates as a Ukrainian unit employing kamikaze drones successfully destroys a Russian unmanned vehicle. This vehicle, used by the opposing forces for transportation purposes, is clearly pictured in the video of the attack. The video underscores the reality of a modern battlefield, where every moment in contested territory is under surveillance.

This particular incident occurred in the industrial area of Avdiivka, as reported by the Ukrainian news outlet, Militarnyi. The video of the attack was shared by the 110th Mechanized Brigade on Telegram, providing further insight into how Ukrainian forces use unmanned flying vehicles in combat scenarios. The actual attack was conducted using an FPV drone outfitted with an explosive charge, most probably a grenade, which efficiently neutralized the Russian unmanned vehicle. In a telling display of modern warfare, one airborne drone hunted down another ground-based drone.

Operation of the FPV drone

The unmanned Russian vehicle, stationed atop a wheeled chassis, was reportedly transporting ammunition to enemy combat units. The drone, operated by a pilot from the 110th Mechanized Brigade, was able to track down the vehicle and intercept it en route to Russian-held positions.

According to military experts, the payload attached to the FPV drone was most likely a modified version of the PG-7 grenade, typically used in handheld anti-tank RPG-7 grenade launchers. Ukrainian forces have been known to use small FPV drones as flying ammunition, circling until optimal detonation conditions are met. Other variations of these drones are designed to drop a payload on the target and return to the base for refilling. Of course, the forces being targeted are constantly devising ways to avoid such attacks, often using innovative means such as makeshift trench shields made from solar panels.

Russian ground vehicles

The Russian forces employ ground drones for multiple purposes, though the delivery of ammunition without endangering soldiers seems to be a preferred use. The subsequent explosion following the drone strike implies that ammunition was indeed present in the vehicle's storage compartment.

The Russians have recently started using new unmanned platforms. These platforms, based on a tracked chassis, are utilized for transporting supplies and, if circumstances call for it, evacuating wounded soldiers from the battlefield. These devices are fitted with the Russian Volnorez electronic warfare system to provide protection against drone attacks.
