A recent study published in ''The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition'' found that drinking unsweetened coffee is associated with slight weight loss, while adding sugar to coffee results in weight gain.

How was the impact of coffee on weight studied?

Scientists analyzed data from three health studies ("Nurses’ Health Study", "Nurses’ Health Study II", and "Health Professionals Follow-up Study"). From all the data they contained, they selected those that pertained to participants without cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. In total, they included data from slightly over 155,000 participants.

Researchers analyzed dietary questionnaires which were filled out by participants every four years. Participants were asked, among other things, how often they drink coffee (regular or decaffeinated) and how much creamer, sugar, and whitener they add to it.

Subsequently, changes in the participants' weight were examined. Various factors were taken into account, including the consumption of specific food products and alcohol, physical activity, and health conditions.

Research Results

Researchers discovered that drinking one cup (black and unsweetened) of coffee per day - both decaffeinated and regular - was associated with a loss of 0.26 lbs of body weight over 4 years.

Adding one teaspoon of sugar to your daily coffee was associated with a weight gain of approximately 0.2 lbs over 4 years. Researchers found that this trend was stronger among participants with a higher BMI and those of a younger age.

A shot of health. Eat every day, and you'll lower your cholesterol

They also discovered that the addition of whitener or cream was not associated with any significant weight gain. - Our results may be particularly relevant for people with overweight and obesity, as the observed weight gain associated with adding sugar was greater in these individuals - commented the authors of the study.

Relief for the throat. A treasure worth acquiring before the infection season

Coffee consumption is not, however, a general dietary indicator - losing 2.2 pounds would only be possible after 8 years of drinking three cups of coffee daily. Therefore, it's not worth treating coffee as a dietary drink, but a neutral one. On condition that it is drunk without sugar.
