After peeling an egg, the shell typically ends up in the organic waste bin, which is appropriate for disposal. However, if the inside of the egg is deemed unfit for consumption, the egg white and yolk should be thrown into the mixed waste container. Egg cartons, on the other hand, belong in the yellow bin for metals and plastics if they are made of styrofoam, or the blue bin for paper if they are clean and made of paper. Dirty packaging should be placed in the mixed waste container.
Do you throw away eggshells? It's unnecessary
It's worth reconsidering discarding eggshells, as they have versatile uses due to their composition. Eggshells contain many nutrients, including calcium (essential for building bones), collagen, protein, and hyaluronic acid (important for joint health). Additionally, they contain magnesium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, selenium, and silicon, providing antibacterial properties. So, how can you make use of eggshells?
Eggshell fertilizer
One popular way to use eggshells is by making fertilizer. The array of eggshell minerals benefits soil and, consequently, the plants growing in it. To prepare this fertilizer, wash the shells, dry them, crush them finely (or blend them), and sprinkle them into the soil, mixing lightly.
Other uses for eggshells
Eggshells can also be consumed. While eating them in their "regular" form isn't comfortable, with proper preparation, they can be used to enhance coffee. Clean the shells thoroughly and grind them into a powder. Add half a teaspoon to your cup along with the coffee grounds and pour over – the drink will become more aromatic.
The collagen, protein, and other components in eggshells also benefit the skin. A common practice is to apply poultices made from soaked shells to the skin. To do this, clean the shells and soak them in apple cider vinegar for two days. The shells will become soft after two days. Apply them to red or irritated areas for quick relief.
