Dog falls through ice in Wellesley: Dramatic rescue captured on video
In the city of Wellesley, Massachusetts, a dangerous situation unfolded when the ice broke under a dog, leading his owner to experience a nightmare during the rescue attempt. The local police department posted a video of the rescue operation online.
On Sunday, January 12, emergency services in Wellesley received a report about a dog owner who, along with his pet, fell into the ice-covered Lake Waban. The man was taking the animal for a walk.
The man attempted to rescue his dog
"We turned the corner and there was a dock that made its way out into the ice and the dog saw some birds and went for it ," said Ed Berger, the dog’s owner, in an interview with NBC Boston.
The victim explained that he asked bystanders to call emergency services and then, using a boat, tried to rescue his pet on his own. Unfortunately, his attempt was unsuccessful.
"There’s nothing more horrific than not being able to get to your dog. You love them as if they were family," Berger emphasized.
The victim could not return to shore independently
In the video posted online by the local police, a group of rescuers is seen dressed in specialized gear, crawling to the middle of the lake to assist the man and his dog, Tommy.
"Both the man and the dog were too far from the shore and couldn't return," reported local services.
According to NBC Boston, Ed Berger spent about 10 to 15 minutes in the freezing water, while his eight-year-old cocker spaniel endured nearly half an hour. The services reported that the man and his pet received the necessary assistance. Both have returned home safely.
