The Prime Minister of Great Britain, Rishi Sunak, recently announced that there will be a ban on breeding American bully XL dogs. The new law is to take effect from 2024. In his justification, the politician reminded of the attacks by dogs of this breed on people.

- It's clear that it's not about a few poorly trained dogs. This is a pattern of behavior and it can't go on - emphasized the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, in his speech. The politician emphasized that the breeding of the American bully XL will soon be banned in the UK. Let us remind you that there have been serious attacks by representatives of this breed on humans in a short period of time.

In the United Kingdom, the American Bully XL has been on the banned list since 2024

The death of a 52-year-old man in Walsall after an attack by an American bully XL breed dog. A few days earlier - an attack on an 11-year-old girl and two adult men trying to help the child. These are just two of many troubling incidents reported by BBC News.

After an attack on a girl, there was an uproar in the British media again. Foreign Secretary, Suella Braverman, then said that she is urgently seeking advice on this matter. As we read on the Polsat News website, in the UK the number of cases of people who have been hospitalized due to dog bites has been increasing for 15 years. So far, the breeding of the American Pit Bull Terrier, Argentine Dogo, Fila Brasileiro, and Tosa Inu has already been banned on the islands. Now, the American Bully XL is to be added to the list.

Although American Bully XLs make up only 1% of the dog population in Great Britain, they were responsible for as much as 44% of attacks recorded in 2023, according to data from Bully Watch.

And what about the dogs that the British have in their possession? The Prime Minister reassures that they won't be put to sleep (unless the owner doesn't comply with the new rules), but a "temporary amnesty" will be applied to them.

- Owners will have to register their dogs, neuter them, take them out in a muzzle, and invest in insurance. If this does not happen, the dogs will be put to sleep, and the owners will be burdened with criminal liability - he explained.

The United Kennel Club in the USA claims that despite its massive build, the Bully XL is an "excellent family dog". However, the same association also notes that aggression is characteristic of this breed, as reminded by BBC News.

The American bully comes in several varieties, which vary in size:

  • pocket bully – the smallest variety;
  • classic bully– dogs resembling older breeds of bull terriers;
  • standard bully – more muscular than the classic variety;
  • extreme/exotic bully — the most deformed, and thus controversial variety of American bully;
  • XL– reach a height up to 22 inches at the withers and a weight ranging from 66 to 110 lbs.

The price of an American bully XL ranges from 1500 dollars to even 10,000 dollars. It's worth noting that these dogs struggle with numerous health problems, and the most deformed ones, like the exotic bully, have trouble moving, breathing, and often only live up to three years.
