When faced with this issue, we usually consider calling a plumber. However, there is a way to tackle the problem yourself without needing to use chemical cleaners. These handy home remedies can save your shower in less than an hour, and you'll save several dozen dollars in the process.

Why does the shower get clogged?

What is the most common cause of shower clogs? It's usually hair combined with soap, foam, or conditioners. The gels and soaps used in the shower contain metallic salts, such as sodium and potassium, which dissolve in water during bathing. One might assume they are harmless, but in reality, hard water and detergents can settle inside old, damaged pipes, leading to blockages.

Aspirin not just for headaches

Aspirin, commonly used for colds, can also help combat clogs in pipes. How can you use it? Drop two aspirin tablets into the drain and pour in a cup of heated vinegar. When you hear the characteristic fizzing, it means the ingredients have started a chemical reaction. After five minutes, pour a cup of boiling water, which should solve the problem.

Instead of aspirin, you can use baking soda. Pour two tablespoons of baking soda into the drain and add half a cup of vinegar. After 30 minutes, flush the drain with a half-gallon of boiling water. Thanks to the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar, all impurities should be removed.

Alternative method for a clogged drain

Another option is to use a combination of baking soda, vinegar, and salt. Pour two tablespoons of baking soda and two tablespoons of salt into the drain, then add half a cup of vinegar. You'll observe foam coming out of the drain — this is quite normal. After half an hour, rinse the drain with warm water. The problem will disappear as if it was never there.
