DIY sink unclogging. How citric acid and other home remedies can solve your pipe troubles

Clogged sinks are distasteful challenges that frequently occur, particularly in the kitchen. When we observe that the water is draining slower than usual and there's an unpleasant odor with a distinctive bubbling sound from the pipes, it becomes apparent that our drain needs unclogging. While chemical agents could be used, inexpensive home remedies can offer a similar level of effectiveness.

Unclogging a sink at home: The use of citric acid

Home remedies for clogged sinks are easy to administer and relatively affordable. Regular citric acid, for instance, is ideal for unclogging drains. Just pour a spoonful into the drain, followed by a large amount of hot water. This mixture acts immediately and importantly, won't damage the pipes. If your drain is prone to clogging, you should use this treatment at least once a week.

Citric acid also serves as an excellent decalcifier for kettles. Pour a packet of citric acid into the kettle, fill it with water, and bring it to the boil. This approach swiftly removes scale and is not only more cost-effective than store-bought descalers but also entirely natural, posing no risk to our health. Simply dispose of the mixture, rinse the kettle, and it's ready for reuse. Unlike vinegar, which can also be used for descaling, it doesn't produce a strong, unpleasant smell.

Other homemade remedies for a clogged drain

You can unclog a drain using other homemade remedies. A combination of baking soda and vinegar in equal proportions can be an effective solution. Simply pour both into the drain, followed by a large volume of hot water.

Want to prevent your sink from clogging? It's crucial to remember not to discard leftovers or tea and coffee grounds down the drain. Also, avoid pouring hot fat down the drain, for example, from a frying pan, as it will solidify in the pipes and cause blockages.
