The Gatsby sandwich – what is it and what is its tradition?
The history of the Gatsby sandwich dates back to the '70s, when it was created in Cape Town as a way to provide cheap and filling food, ideal for larger groups. At that time, fish and chips stall owner Rashaad Pandy decided to prepare such a sandwich for hungry workers when he had nothing else to feed them.
The original Gatsby sandwich consisted of a baguette filled with fries, pieces of meat, lettuce, tomatoes, and spicy sauce. The name refers to the film "The Great Gatsby", symbolizing luxury and abundance, which perfectly captures the character of this sandwich. Over the years, the Gatsby sandwich recipe has evolved, and today there are many variations with a variety of toppings, such as chicken, steak, or seafood.
The Gatsby sandwich has become a culinary icon, combining flavors from different cultures and representing the spirit of South African hospitality. It's worth trying this delicacy to experience the atmosphere of Cape Town on your own plate.
Recipe for a Gatsby sandwich
Preparing a Gatsby sandwich may seem challenging, but the final result will reward every effort. Below you will find a proven recipe for an XXL Gatsby sandwich that can easily replace a second course.
Ingredients:
- 1 long baguette (about 24 inches, or two smaller ones)
- 1 lb. of fries (preferably homemade, but frozen ones will also work)
- 14 oz. of meat (e.g., chicken, beef, or pork chops – according to preference)
- 2 medium tomatoes, sliced
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 3.5 oz. of iceberg lettuce, chopped
- 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons of spicy chili sauce (or peri-peri sauce, for an authentic taste)
- Spices: salt, pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder
Preparation:
- Prepare the meat: Cut the meat into thin pieces or strips. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Sauté in a hot pan with a little oil until it becomes tender and juicy.
- Prepare the fries: Fry the fries until golden brown, then drain them on a paper towel. Season with salt.
- Prepare the baguette: Slice the baguette lengthwise, not cutting all the way through. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the inside.
- Assemble the ingredients: On the bottom of the baguette, evenly layer the lettuce, then tomatoes, and onions. Add the sautéed meat and top with fries. Drizzle the entire sandwich with spicy chili sauce and cover with the top of the baguette.
- Serve: Before serving, it's a good idea to press the sandwich lightly so the ingredients meld. You can also heat it in the oven for a few minutes to make the baguette crispy.
This version of the Gatsby sandwich combines simplicity with exceptional flavor, making it perfect for a family lunch, party, or evening with friends. There is no better way to try South African street food in the comfort of your home!
