Discover sandy retreats and ancient wonders in Croatia’s Nin
Croatia's coastline has long attracted tourists with its crystal-clear, turquoise waters. However, finding sandy beaches isn't so easy, as rocks and pebbles dominate. But relaxing on soft sand is indeed possible. In northern Dalmatia, a magical lagoon awaits visitors.
A unique corner of Croatia
Tourists come to this small town to relax on the sandy beaches, which are rare for Croatia. The lagoon around Nin features shallow water, making it ideal for families with children. Additionally, the youngest can build sandcastles on the beach. Queen's Beach, also known as Kraljičina Plaža, offers stunning views of the Velebit Mountains.
Locals offer loungers and umbrella rentals, but you can easily lay out on a towel or blanket due to the soft sand.
The area around Nin is known not only for its beautiful sandy beaches but also for its healing mud. Tourists often cover themselves with it and rinse off in the shallow water. These mud baths are beneficial for rheumatism and skin conditions.
An extraordinary history
Nin also fascinates with its intriguing history. It is a town with roots dating back to the 9th century BC. From Roman times, you can find remnants of an amphitheater and the largest contemporary temple in the Dalmatia region. In the past, Nin also served as a royal residence and was the seat of the first Croatian bishopric.
When touring the old town, located on an island, you must not miss the Church of the Holy Cross, once considered the smallest cathedral in the world. Of sacred sites, it's also worth seeing the Church of St. Anselm, standing on the site of a former Romanesque cathedral, and the Church of St. Nicholas. Additionally, the Archaeological Museum displays numerous exhibits, mainly from Roman times.
