DHL Express halts high-value shipments to US amid tariff row

German courier company DHL Express is suspending some shipments to the United States, reports the BBC. This move is a result of the tariffs imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. The company cites prolonged customs clearance due to these tariffs.

DHL Express has announced that starting Monday, April 21st, it will halt shipments valued over $800 to the United States. This decision stems from the extended customs clearance process following the introduction of the new tariff system by the U.S. president's administration Donald Trump, reports the BBC.

DHL stated that the suspension applies to packages shipped by companies worldwide to U.S. consumers and will remain in effect "until further notice." Those already in transit will arrive, but with delays. Shipments valued under $800 will continue to be delivered without major changes.

End of easy deliveries

Why was this decision made? Until now, shipments valued up to 2,500 dollars could be sent to the USA with minimal formalities. However, the new U.S. tariffs have introduced more stringent customs controls.

The White House plans to tighten regulations on shipments below $800 on May 2nd, particularly those from China and Hong Kong, eliminating the so-called de minimis exception that allowed the transport of low-value packages without duty.

China retaliates

In response to the tariff increases by the Trump administration, Hong Kong Post has suspended package deliveries to the USA. This decision took effect immediately for sea shipments, and for air shipments, it will take effect on April 27th. Letter shipments are not affected by these changes.

Last week, Washington imposed additional tariffs of 145% on Chinese products, and Beijing responded with tariffs of 125% on American goods.
