Debunking the hygiene myth: How intimate body hair contributes to overall health and sexual appeal
Many consider waxing intimate regions as a must for aesthetic reasons. However, not everyone chooses to do so. In particular, women who decide against it often face criticism and are labelled unhygienic. Nonetheless, healthcare professionals emphasize the benefits of maintaining natural body hair.

Intimate hair has its benefits - many of which are unheard of
Our intimate hair acts as a shield against chafing during sexual interaction while reducing the risk of bacterial or fungal transmission. It functions as a natural barrier protecting the reproductive organs, filtering out impurities and harmful microorganisms, much like nose hair and eyelashes. The sebum, produced by hair follicles, further contributes to this defense by preventing bacterial multiplication, thereby minimizing the risk of infections and contaminations.
Moreover, it's believed that intimate hair enhances the quality of our sex lives. This enhancement is credited to pheromones - which are released by our sweat glands, especially abundant in the genital regions. Hair assists in retaining these pheromones, increasing sexual appeal to our partners.
Should you shave your intimate areas?
Some may wonder if there's a need to shave before consulting a gynecologist or urologist. The consensus among most doctors is that shaving isn't necessary and that hair does not obstruct examinations or hygiene maintenance. The same applies before childbirth, unless it's a cesarean section. Due to the incision line made above the pubic mound during surgery, shaving part of the body might be required.
So, how to safely shave the intimate regions? Most importantly, using clean razors and tools as well as thoroughly washing the area is recommended. Using appropriate cosmetics, preferably containing aloe, is beneficial in preventing irritation. It's advised to wax "with the grain" of the hair, finishing up by washing thoroughly again and applying a moisturizing cream.
