On Saturday, a tragic artillery shelling occurred at a market near Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. As reported by AFP, at least 54 people were killed, and 158 were injured. The attack was attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which is one of the parties involved in the ongoing civil war in Sudan.

The incident took place in Omdurman, where the injured are still being brought to the Al-Nao hospital. An employee of this facility, who wishes to remain anonymous, informed AFP that the casualty figures might change. Witnesses claim that the sounds of artillery came from the west, where RSF forces are stationed.

The massacre occurred a day after RSF leader Mohamed Hamdane Daglo announced the expulsion of the army from the capital. It was the first admission that his forces had lost control over parts of Khartoum. After months of stalemate, the army launched a massive offensive in January, taking key positions, including the general staff.

Since April 2023, RSF has been at war with the government army. The conflict has already claimed thousands of lives, and over 12 million people have had to leave their homes.
