"In the event of ash fall, we urge residents to use masks to prevent respiratory diseases," authorities announced in a statement.
Some people in the affected area sought medical attention. They were feeling unwell after inhaling smoke and ash from the eruption.
Rising to 9547 feet above sea level, Merapi is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia. However, it's not the only one in the region. The entire country is in the Pacific Ring of Fire - a zone known for frequent volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
Merapi underwent two eruptions in December. A powerful explosion occurred on Sunday, December 3, resulting in hot smoke clouds and ash being catapulted up to 9842 feet.
Abdul Muhari, National Disaster Management Agency spokesman, reported that several villages were smothered with falling ash during the eruption, completely blocking visibility. Several dozen people were on the mountain during the eruption. Immediate evacuation was possible for some, while others had to wait several hours for assistance. Tragically, not everyone was rescued.
The eruption resulted in 22 fatalities. Many tourists were seriously injured and admitted to hospitals with extensive burns.
A subsequent eruption occurred on December 23. However, it was relatively mild and did not result in any harm.
