Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid responsible for thousands of deaths annually in the USA. According to 2021 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this drug is the primary cause of death among Americans aged 18 to 49.

The number of victims due to this drug is escalating yearly. This recent event featuring fentanyl occurred at an elementary school in Amherst, Virginia.

The Independent reports that the incident began on Tuesday (December 12), when a student brought gummy bears to share with other pupils at the school.

Subsequently, several students displayed intense allergic reactions. The story was detailed by the mother of 10-year-old Hayden, who was one of those who consumed the gummies.

It was one of the worst days of my life. Today, I received a call from Hayden's school informing me of the incident. Apparently, he and other kids had eaten some gummies. I urge all parents to caution their children about accepting items from others, as it could be life-threatening -- she implored.

He ate approximately 10 gummies, which had an unusual taste

Hayden informed ABC13 reporters that he had consumed about 10 gummies. The boy reported the candies had a peculiar flavor, but he felt pleasantly after ingestion.

Regrettably, severe nausea ensued soon after. The affected students were promptly tended to by medical professionals. Meanwhile, the police are investigating the incident.
