What do you need to know?

  • The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, expressed his willingness to join an international military mission in Ukraine if a peace agreement with Russia is achieved.
  • According to his view, security guarantees for Ukraine might include a mineral resources agreement with the USA and stabilization military forces from European nations.
  • Pavel also mentioned Ukraine's potential NATO membership, highlighting that the next administration in the USA could have a different position on this issue than the current one.

What are the Czech plans in the context of Ukraine?

The President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, emphasized in an interview with the portal "European Truth" that the Czech Republic is prepared to take part in an international military mission in Ukraine if a peace agreement with Russia is achieved. - We are part of this coalition now - Pavel noted, referring to the "coalition of the willing" countries that might send stabilization military forces to Ukraine.

President Pavel acknowledged that various politicians may have differing opinions on sending troops to Ukraine, but he stressed that "if a strong group of European nations is ready to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, I am convinced Czechia should be among them." He added, "In reality, there are territories worldwide occupied by another state. But these occupations are not legally recognized. Yes, this situation may last for some time, but it is a matter of principle."

What about Ukraine's membership in NATO?

Pavel also addressed the question of Ukraine's membership in NATO, pointing out former U.S. President Donald Trump's stance on the matter.

- We have already seen that the American president (Donald Trump, - ed.) rejected the option of Ukraine's rapid accession to NATO. If this becomes an obstacle to reaching a peace agreement, then so be it. After all, NATO membership is not a matter of a few months - declared the Czech president.

- Let's have it as an open issue for the future because politicians come and go.There will be a different U.S. administration in three years, and we may see a different stance - concluded President Pavel.
