Professional cyclists are often required to train on public roads, a practice that comes with its fair share of risks. This reality hit home for Andrey Amador in a jarring way. The Costa Rican cyclist's recent brush with danger underscored the precarious nature of their training conditions, something he was fortunate to survive.

Amador's routine training session on the roads around Barcelona on Friday, May 10, turned perilous. The incident, drawing considerable attention worldwide, was highlighted by the chilling image of his ravaged bike shared online, which illustrated the severity of his accident.

A miraculous survival

According to Catalunya Radio, the accident occurred near Amador's residence when he was struck by a truck. While details were initially sparse, Catalan police have since investigated the accident's circumstances. The devastating state of Amador's bike suggests the collision was anything but minor. He was promptly hospitalized with multiple injuries, including several fractures, the most severe damage reported to his lower leg, affecting the tibia, fibula, and foot.

"Besides, his health condition is not serious," Catalunya Radio provided a glimmer of hope amidst the grim report.
Currently in the hospital, Amador has already undergone surgery. The road to recovery appears long, with cycling off-limits for the foreseeable future. Details regarding the cause of the accident and the truck driver's fate remain undisclosed.

Andrey Amador is no stranger to the global cycling scene, representing Costa Rica in three Olympic Games and participating in prestigious races worldwide. Despite his accolade-rich career, including a bronze medal at the World Championships and stage wins at both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España, his recent exclusion from the American team EF Education-Easy Post's lineup for the Giro d'Italia marks a poignant chapter in his journey.
