Croatia sets new electricity consumption record amid heatwave

The Croatian energy transmission system operator, HOPS, has provided information about a new record in electricity consumption. According to N1 television, on Tuesday, electricity consumption reached 3,341 megawatt hours. This surge is attributed to the extreme heat affecting the tourist paradise for many days.

Due to extreme heat in Croatia, another record has been broken. This time it is related to electricity consumption.

Attention was drawn to the fact that the tourist season in Croatia is becoming increasingly intense, and air conditioning systems are being used more and more frequently—not only in tourist facilities but also in offices and apartments.

In light of this, it is expected that this will not be the end of hourly electricity consumption records.

Extreme heat in Croatia

For nearly two weeks, extremely high temperatures have persisted in Croatia. In some parts of the country, the highest weather alerts remain. As a result of the heat, a new sea temperature record has been set. On Wednesday, deformation was recorded on railway tracks along the Croatian coast.

Despite these conditions, HOPS assures that the availability of the transmission network is not threatened. The operator emphasizes that no problems with electricity supplies should be expected. Croatia meets its energy needs both from domestic power plants and through imports.

Almost half of the energy comes from the Croatian part of the Krsko nuclear power plant, which Croatia shares with Slovenia.
