Crete prepares for an earthquake
Extreme weather events are becoming more intense - with winds growing gustier and rainfalls turning more violent and destructive.
Residents of seismically active areas, including Crete, the largest Greek island, are growing increasingly concerned about the risk of stronger earthquakes.
In this idyllic Mediterranean locale, the "Minoas 2024" exercises are taking place, with the final phase slated from April 22 to April 24. These drills are designed to set a precedent for other regions in the country, focusing on preparing for an earthquake and its aftermath.
Nearly 100,000 island residents, including all school students, are participating in the exercises. The drills include evacuations from hotels, public buildings, businesses, and residential areas.
Greece, located in a seismically active zone, experiences frequent earthquakes, though most do not result in fatalities.
The last deadly earthquake in Crete happened in September 2021. The tremor, which had a magnitude of 6, led to one death and several injuries.
