Crackdown in New York: Over 3,500 arrests in immigration sweep

The Department of Homeland Security has initiated an immigration operation in New York, targeting individuals with criminal charges. "Dirtbags like this will continue to be removed from our streets," stated Secretary Kristi Noem, who heads the department.

Newly appointed Secretary Noem announced the start of the operation on Platform X. She released a video displaying the arrest of an individual charged with kidnapping, assault, and burglary. "Dirtbags like this will continue to be removed from our streets," she wrote.

The identity of the detainee remains unknown. An ICE spokesperson, responsible for conducting the operation, declined to comment on the identity of the person in the video, according to "The New York Times." Noem herself traveled to New York for the operation, actively overseeing the agents' activities.

Other agencies, such as the DEA and ATF, also participated in the operation. Photos on social media show that many individuals have been detained. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has not yet commented on the situation, as reported by the newspaper.

The operation in New York is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration, which includes actions across the country. Since the beginning of Trump's term, ICE has arrested over 3,500 individuals, including 1,179 in a single day.

ICE's actions have sparked controversy, especially regarding the additional arrests of individuals who were not primary targets of the operation. Thomas Homan, head of ICE responsible for border actions, emphasizes that the aim is to apprehend individuals who threaten public safety.

Kristi Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, was confirmed as secretary on Saturday after her Senate approval. Her task is to lead counter-terrorism efforts and oversee immigration operations. Noem has described illegal immigration as an "invasion," as reminded by "The New York Times."
