Corruption in the Russian government? Putin's deputy defense minister arrested

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Vladimirovich Ivanov has been arrested on suspicion of corruption, as reported by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

The Investigative Committee's press service on Telegram announced that Timur Vladimirovich Ivanov, the Russian Deputy Minister of Defense, has been arrested on suspicion of committing a bribery crime under Article 290, paragraph 6 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

According to the Moscow Times, Ivanov could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

Who is Timur Ivanov?

Born in 1975 in Moscow, Ivanov's career commenced in the Russian energy sector before being promoted by Sergei Shoigu, the current Minister of Defense.

Following Shoigu's appointment as the governor of the Moscow region in 2012, Ivanov became his deputy. In 2016, he was further promoted to deputy minister of defense by Shoigu.

As of October 2022, Ivanov has been under sanctions imposed by the European Union.
