Comedy takes White House: Bill Maher's surprising dinner with Trump

The host of the HBO comedy show, Bill Maher, met with Donald Trump at the White House. In the past, he did not hold back his words of criticism toward the president, but after the visit, he changed his mind. "Everything I’ve not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent. At least on this night, with this guy," said Maher.

Bill Maher, the comedian and host of the show "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO, shared his impressions of having dinner with Donald Trump. The meeting, which took place in March at the White House, surprised the journalist, who admitted that the president was completely different from his public image. Until now, Maher had been among the critics of the President of the United States. The meeting was organized by Kid Rock, the music star, and was also attended by Dana White, head of the UFC organization.

Maher noted that Trump was open to conversation and did not shy away from difficult topics, reports the New York Post. He spoke about his observations on his own show.

"Everything I’ve not liked about him was, I swear to God, absent. At least on this night, with this guy. I never felt I had to walk on eggshells around him. And honestly, I voted for Clinton and Obama, but I would never feel comfortable talking to them the way I was able to talk with Donald Trump, quotes the comedian. Make of it what you will," quotes the comedian, "New York Post".

During the dinner, Maher presented Trump with a list of insults that the president had directed at him in the past. To the comedian's surprise, Trump reacted with humor and signed the list. Maher also received several hats with "MAGA" written on them. The comedian emphasized that despite political differences, the conversation was relaxed and full of mutual respect. He was surprised that Trump used the word "loss" in the context of the 2020 elections.

Maher pointed out character traits of Trump that are not visible publicly. According to Maher, the president can laugh, even at himself, which was a big surprise for the comedian. The comedian claims that he has spoken many times with "prominent people" who do not make eye contact or listen to what is being said. He did not notice this in the current president of the USA.

"Just for starters, he laughs. I’d never seen him laugh in public. But he does — including at himself — and it’s not fake. Believe me, as a comedian of forty years, I know a fake laugh when I hear it," summarized Maher.
