Colonel Yuri Ignat, a spokesperson for the Command of the Air Forces of Ukraine, has highlighted the role of F-16 fighters. These aircraft, according to him, could significantly contribute to liberating territories currently under Russian control, if provided in sufficient numbers. Western countries have so far pledged several dozens of these planes. Here's what sets apart these crafts and why they're so sought after by Ukrainians.

In an interview with Novynarnia portal, Yuri Ignat conveyed that achieving air superiority is crucial for Ukrainian attempts to reclaim territories including Crimea. Since the onset of the full-scale invasion, Russia has boasted greater air force prowess. However, the tide is turning due to the effective combat of Russian aircraft with air defense systems, and the situation might further improve for Ukrainians with the addition of modern fighters.

The importance of F-16s for Ukraine

The primary focus lies on F-16s for which Kyiv has been campaigning for a while. At present, the relevant Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel are undergoing training. The delivery of these aircrafts is set to commence next year. Denmark and the Netherlands have been the first to commit to this.

When asked if F-16s would be a universal cure ensuring the liberation of Crimea, Colonel Ignat affirmed, stressing that the mission would not solely rest on individual aircraft.

"Yes, but it won't come down to individual planes. We need to view this holistically. Without air control, liberating territories becomes an incredibly challenging task. Ground operations for de-occupation cannot succeed without air superiority. That's the key," stated Yuri Ignat.

Aircrafts that are worth their weight in gold

The F-16, manufactured by American corporation Lockheed Martin, is the most utilized combat aircraft worldwide. It's extensively operated by many NATO countries. The plane measures approximately 49 feet in length and can reach a maximum speed of up to 2 Mach (over 1304 mph).

Ukrainian military and analysts previously highlighted that amidst the weapon supplies from various countries, a unique feature of the F-16 from Ukraine's perspective is its capacity to deploy a diverse arsenal. By default, the aircraft is equipped with a six-barrel M61 Vulcan 20mm gun, but can also carry additional weaponry. Among these are AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM, AGM-84D Harpoon anti-ship missiles, CBU-87, CBU-89, GBU-10, GBU-12, Paveway and JDAM bombs.

However, F-16s aren’t the only fighters Ukraine has its eyes on. Authorities in Kyiv have also shown keen interest in Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighters. These aircrafts can operate from short, makeshift runways designed on roads. In comparison to American fighters, they offer simpler ground handling and cheaper overall maintenance. While Stockholm appears to be progressively softening its position, it has not yet given any clear indications pertaining to a potential transfer.
