"Penguin" brought viewers the story of Oswald Cobblepot, whom we saw in "The Batman" with Robert Pattinson. In the series, whose biggest star was Colin Farrell, we delved into the underground of Gotham to witness the rise of the Penguin's empire. He had to battle mainly against the Italian Falcone family for control in the drug trade. In a series of plot twists, power was seized by Sofia, played fantastically by Cristin Milioti. The final episode focused on the clash between her and Oswald. But were viewers prepared for such intense emotions?
Colin Farrell comments on the "Penguin" finale - warning: spoilers ahead
Colin Farrell shared poignant memories from the set of the final episode of HBO's limited series "Penguin," where the atmosphere was incredibly somber and full of emotion.
During a Q&A session after the "Penguin" finale screening at the Saban Media Center, Farrell described the night of filming the last scene as filled with "dark energy." At a critical moment, his character, Oswald Cobblepot, commits a shocking murder. Without spoilers, we won't reveal who loses their life.
Farrell highlighted the depth of this scene, stating that it was truly the extinguishing of the last shred of innocence. The actor also noted that after a year of working together, a strong bond had formed between the cast and crew, further intensifying the emotions of this scene.
Deirdre O’Connell, who plays Os's mother, Francis Cobblepot, described her experience filming the last scene, where her character, in a vegetative state, cannot experience her son's promise fulfilled. She recalled that she didn't have a plan for this scene, but Colin did something unique - he withdrew his love. She felt it, and it gave her chills and brought tears.
Showrunner Lauren LeFranc explained that she wanted to portray Os as a flawed but empathetic character. LeFranc stated she wanted to explore the man who hides behind the antagonist that Batman fans know from earlier films and comics.
Farrell pointed out that the character's psychological complexity and relationship with his mother attracted him to the role. He admitted that it was so human, and there was pain in it, but also beauty. Notably, for the first time, Penguin is not a character detached from reality, almost like someone from a fantasy or horror film, but a real person who experiences many tragedies. Will Colin Farrell take home all the possible awards for this role? The awards season is starting soon, and we'll find out! The final episode of "Penguin" was released on Monday, November 11th, on the Max platform. The creators have already promised that the TV Penguin will return.
