It was reported that the U.S. Coast Guard, which routinely patrols the area around the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, encountered a Russian warship in international waters but within the U.S. exclusive economic zone.

The crew of the Coast Guard cutter on Monday spotted a Russian "Vishnya-class vessel" approximately 30 miles southeast of Amukta Pass, the Coast Guard said. The crew of one of the helicopters also noted the vessel.

According to the statement, the ship was passing through international waters but "remained within the U.S. exclusive economic zone," which extends up to 230 miles from the U.S. coastline.

The American Coast Guard did not establish communication but followed the ship as it moved eastward.

It was noted that this was done to "ensure that there would be no disruptions to U.S. interests at sea around Alaska," said Commander Steven Baldovsky.
