According to German media, six climate activists from the Last Generation movement cut the airport's fence and entered the airfield around 11 PM Eastern Time. They began a protest on the runway, gluing themselves to the ground.
By 1 AM Eastern Time, all takeoffs and landings were halted. About 50 flights were canceled or delayed, and planes scheduled to land in Frankfurt were diverted to other airports.
After 1 AM, air traffic began to resume. The airport announced it would take legal action against the protesters, who face severe penalties.
"Through such actions, they endanger not only air traffic but also human lives," said Christian Engel, the airport spokesperson, to "Bild".
What does "Last Generation" want?
"Last Generation" is an international movement demanding the phase-out of fossil fuels by 2030. It highlights the ongoing climate crisis and advocates radical steps to prevent disaster.
"Last Generation" has been conducting similar protests in many countries for months. On Wednesday, activists paralyzed another airport—Cologne/Bonn.
