Chrysanthemum care tips: Keep your autumn blooms vibrant

Chrysanthemums are flowers that have become a permanent feature of the autumn landscape. More people are choosing to decorate their homes with them as well. Even the most beautiful colors, however, will lose their charm when yellowing leaves appear. Instead of giving up on the plant, you can take steps to rejuvenate it.

Chrysanthemums are part of the aster family with many varieties that differ in color, shape, and size of the flowers. They are hardy and tolerate low temperatures well, making them some of the most popular decorations in late October and early November. However, yellow leaves may start to appear, detracting from their visual appeal. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent and address this issue when noticed early.

Why do chrysanthemums have yellow leaves?

Chrysanthemums are known for their colorful flowers and green stems and leaves. However, even these robust plants can develop unsightly yellow leaves.

The most common cause is improper watering. Chrysanthemums prefer moist soil but do not thrive in waterlogged conditions. Watering them too often or too heavily can lead to root rot and yellowing leaves. Conversely, if they are not watered frequently enough, they can experience water stress, which can also cause yellowing.

A lack of nutrients can also lead to color changes. The soil may be deficient in nitrogen and iron. In response, the plant goes into survival mode and conserves resources, resulting in yellow, less visually appealing leaves.

Chrysanthemum yellowing - what to do?

Before you consider discarding the plant, try a rescue operation. First, adjust your watering routine—keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water regularly without overdoing it.

Regularly fertilize chrysanthemums with essential nutrients. A multi-component fertilizer containing iron, nitrogen, and phosphorus is ideal and easily available at gardening stores.

Also, ensure you place the plant in an ideal location. Although they are hardy, chrysanthemums have their preferences. Choose a bright spot that is sheltered from direct sunlight.
