Christina Applegate's moving Emmy night: plaudits, jests and an emotional ovation amidst battle with MS
The Emmy Awards, often referred to as the "television Oscars", were held in the United States. The best dramatic series award went to 'Succession', the best comedy production to "The Bear", and the best mini-series to "Beef" ("Feud"). Despite the declining interest and rising complaints about the dullness of similar events in recent years, this year's Emmy Awards ceremony proved to be a dynamic show replete with amusing and touching moments.

Christina Applegate's appearance on stage was a mix of emotion and laughter. The practically retired actress, visibly moved by the reaction from the crowd of stars, had tears in her eyes.
At the Emmy Awards, Applegate was both one of the presenters and nominees. She was celebrated for her role in "Dead to Me". In the category of "best actress in a comedy series", she was in illustrious company with other nominees including Jenna Ortega ("Wednesday"), Rachel Brosnahan ("Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"), Natasha Lyonne ("Poker Face"), and Quinta Brunson ("Mission: Elementary School") - the latter ultimately secured the award.
As Applegate made her appearance and fulfilled her duties on stage, the gathered crowd rose from their seats in acknowledgement. A visibly surprised Christina responded to the standing ovation with a jest, "You don't have to clap for everything I do." A video of her brief performance with teary-eyed Christina can be seen below.
In 2021, Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She began to openly discuss her condition a few months later, pointing out that it was severe. During the filming of "Dead to Me", the Netflix team accommodated her request for a pause due to her health issues. She has disclosed in recent interviews that, as a result of her disease, she has gained over 39 pounds and needs assistance walking. The actress added that she is prepared to end her career if needed.
From the stage, Christina Applegate shared that many people might recognize her as Kelly Bundy from "Married with Children", but she takes special pride in her role in the Netflix series "Dead to Me" as Jen Harding.
Speaking previously about her illness, she said, "Climbing stairs, carrying things - I can't do that anymore. It sucks. I can still drive short distances. I can feed my child. I can climb up the stairs, but never down."
