Hackers are in a committee with the Chinese government. Tensions between the two great world powers continue. Taiwan's status and the upcoming 2024 presidential elections are in the background.

FBI Director Christopher Wray informed on Wednesday about disturbing Chinese attacks on the critical U.S. infrastructure. He also added that it was not only about military targets, but civil as well.

We asked our expert what is so significant about it:

It is essential to ask ourselves why, this time, public opinion was informed so quickly about the attack. Usually, the intelligence services sort such things in silence and do not inform the public. There are two possible explanations: either the attack was so big the public had to be informed, or there is some political background to it.

The political situation is obviously very tense. Taiwan, Ukraine War, Middle East humanitarian crisis and terrorism.

We obviously know what is going on. American public opinion is more and more tired of funding various enterprises in Europe and Asia. The presidential elections are coming. Biden needs to convince the public opinion the efforts need to be made. There is no better way than just to inform what the situation really is and that U.S. is also involved, not only in terms of money.

It is still hard to tell how dangerous the attacks are. The Chinese government is very good in keeping the information about their resources in silence.

It is really hard to estimate the capabilities of Chinese intelligance services and their real power. The Chinese goverment do not give any information about the smallest technological resources they have.

The potential shutdown of TikTok is also important context. The U.S. government is trying their best to limit Chinese influence on American public opinion.

If they were trying to steal some data they were surely not trying to gather meat information. In such attacks you usely try to still very small about, very percise data instead of big amounts of general information.

Although the information about the targetting of targeting critical infrustructure and civil objects, it is unclear what the real aim of the attack was.
