China warns against Trump's 'Golden Dome' space defense plan
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning expressed "serious concern" on Wednesday about the missile defense shield project announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. China has urged the abandonment of the "Golden Dome" project, which it perceives as having a "clear offensive implications."
The Chinese authorities warn that this plan will escalate the militarization of outer space and the risk of an arms race, Mao stated during a briefing in Beijing.
President Trump announced on Tuesday that he has chosen the new shield project named "Golden Dome," which is expected to cost $175 billion, be completed by the end of his term, and provide nearly 100 percent efficacy.
Spokeswoman Mao assessed that the U.S. plan "violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability. China is seriously concerned about this," she added.
She further remarked that these actions violate the principles of peaceful use of space, contributing to the militarization of outer space and the risk of an arms race.
"U.S. obsession"
The spokeswoman criticized the United States that the country "is obsessed with seeking absolute security for itself," in line with the "America First" principle.
Mao called on the American side to take actions aimed at increasing mutual strategic trust between major powers and maintaining global strategic stability.
