China plots powerful counterstrike to US tariff challenges
China is preparing to implement a series of "strong, multi-pronged" countermeasures in response to tariffs imposed by the United States, according to "China Daily," the English-language press outlet of the ruling party.
According to "China Daily," the options under consideration include both tariff and non-tariff measures. Sources familiar with the situation say that China may tighten control over key materials essential for the American high-tech industry and defense projects, such as rare earth metals, gallium, germanium, and antimony.
China and retaliation on US tariffs: "Multifaceted, long-term framework"
In addition to non-tariff measures, Beijing is also considering imposing additional tariffs on American products, particularly agricultural ones. China has previously imposed tariffs on key American agricultural products and is now contemplating further increases.
"China Daily" reports that Chinese countermeasures will combine "quick and targeted tactics" with a "multifaceted, long-term framework." Beijing insists that it remains open to negotiations if the US shows flexibility, which should be understood as easing tariff policies.
Aware of the Trump administration's tariffs, Beijing had already prepared numerous measures, including both countermeasures and financial tools to maintain domestic market stability—a source told the Chinese state press.
In the only official response from Beijing so far, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that China firmly opposes this move and will "firmly take countermeasures to safeguard its own interests."
