Cheddar-stuffed patties: A cheesy twist on a classic dish
Do you think a meat patty recipe can't be changed much? Recently, I added an ingredient that especially impressed the younger crowd. It's a combination known from burgers, but it also works great for meat patties.
Meat patties are a classic and favorite dinner option. We eat them often because ground meat is readily available and relatively inexpensive. We usually make them with pork, sometimes adding beef. Many people also enjoy a lighter version made with poultry. But what can give them an extra flavor boost? Recently, I chose to incorporate cheddar cheese.
Why do we like cheese when it's warm?
The combination of meat and cheese isn't typically associated with cuisine. However, it's common in burgers. Melted cheddar cheese is not only a popular addition to meat but also familiar from pizza and toast. Many people believe that cheese becomes even better and more aromatic when heated, and of course, the "stretchy" effect adds to its appeal. These patties make a great dinner option, pairing well with potatoes and coleslaw. My kids also enjoy them served with ketchup and a salad made of radishes and pickled cucumbers.
Which cheese melts well?
For patties, it's beneficial to choose cheese that melts easily. Not every type tastes good when warm. Cheeses with a high salt content often melt poorly. Suitable cheeses for heating contain a good amount of fat and water. Cheddar, gouda, and emmental are among them. They are rich in protein, calcium, and vitamins A and B12, which support the nervous system and strengthen bones. For the meat, it's best to use pork with some beef added, and grind it yourself or ask at the store.
