Catania flights halted as mount Etna eruption disrupts travel

The management of the airport in Catania, Sicily, announced on Tuesday the suspension of flight operations, both arrivals and departures, due to increased volcanic activity from Mount Etna. The airport has been temporarily closed.

The crisis management committee decided that it is necessary to wait for the volcanic ash to settle and to thoroughly clean the airport area before flights can resume.

Until then, planned air travels will be canceled or redirected to other airports.

Appeal to travelers

Airport managers have urged passengers to contact their airlines directly for the latest information regarding their reservations and planned travels.

Volcanology experts reported that the volcanic ash cloud resulting from the eruption reached a height of 26,000 feet above ground.
