Car plows through crowd at German Christmas Market; casualties reported
In Magdeburg, located in eastern Germany, there was an attack on the Christmas market on Friday evening. "A car drove into a group of people," said a spokesperson for the Saxony-Anhalt government at the MDR station. Many dramatic recordings were posted online.
"Extensive police operations are currently underway at the Christmas market in Magdeburg. The Christmas market in the city center is closed," the police reported.
The recordings show a car forcefully driving into the crowd.
Emergency services and fire departments are on the scene.
The German public broadcaster MDR reported that "at least one person" died, and many were injured.
About 60 to 80 people might have been injured on Friday evening in Magdeburg, where a car drove into a crowd at the Christmas market, reported the "Bild" newspaper portal.
According to information from the dpa agency, obtained from government sources, the driver has been detained.
