California tragedy: Toddler's accidental shot kills mother
A shocking story unfolded in a home in California. A two-year-old boy reached for an unsecured gun and pulled the trigger. A shot was fired. The bullet struck his 22-year-old mother, who later died in the hospital.
At the time of the tragedy, besides the two-year-old boy and his mother, Jessinya Mina, the house also had the boy's 18-month-old sister and the woman's partner, Andrew Sanchez. He owned the gun and had left it unsecured on a table in the bedroom.
Upon hearing the gunshot and seeing what had happened, Sanchez immediately called for help. The injured woman was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, despite the doctors' efforts, she did not survive.
Sanchez was arrested and charged with endangering a child and improper storage of a firearm. He was released after posting bail.
Jessinya Mina's children have been placed in the care of her parents because Sanchez is not their father.
288 such cases this year
"Due to her boyfriend's carelessness, arrogance, irresponsibility, and ignoring her pleas never to keep a gun in the house, she is gone forever," stated the woman's sister. "My niece and nephew will have to live with memories and stories of their mother," she added.
AMC News reminds us that this is yet another such tragedy. Earlier this month, a 7-year-old boy fatally shot his 2-year-old brother after finding a gun in the compartment of a truck cabin.
According to the non-profit organization Everytown for Gun Safety, this year in the USA there have been at least 288 instances of unintentional firearm use by children. As a result, over 100 people have died, and about 200 were injured.
