At least four people were killed and 27 injured in the collapse of a building by the beach in Mallorca, emergency services reported on Thursday.

The two-story Medusa Beach Club building collapsed in Palma de Mallorca on Thursday around 2:30 PM Eastern Time.

A regional coordination and crisis response center spokesperson said, “We have activated a crisis team following the collapse of the ceiling of a two-story building on Avenida Cartago in Playa de Palma. People are trapped under the rubble. Firefighters and police officers are working on-site,” he emphasized.

Local emergency services reported that psychologists were also called to the scene.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he is “closely monitoring the situation” and that his government will be ready to deploy “all necessary resources and personnel” to assist emergency services at the scene.

Marga Prohens, the president of the Balearic Islands, wrote that she was shocked to hear about the building collapse.

“All my feelings and warmth go out to the families of the four people who lost their lives in this tragic accident, and I wish a speedy recovery to all the injured,” she wrote on platform X.

No information has been released regarding whether the deceased or injured are restaurant staff or vacationers. The exact cause of the structural failure is currently unknown and is under investigation.

Authorities are appealing to anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation. Palma de Mallorca is a popular tourist resort and the capital of the western Mediterranean island.
